2014 Dodge RAM 1500 3.0 V6 EcoDiesel
Today the deepening is focussed on a 2014 Dodge RAM 1500 equipped with 3.0 V6 EcoDiesel V6 179kw and with Bosch EDC17C79 ECU.
The Common Rail Ecodiesel L630 DOHC (Double Overhead Camshaft) engine with 240BHP (243PS, 243CV, 179kW) is placed right under the hood and it’s produced by VM Motori Spa, an Italian company that belongs to FCA Group (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles).
In fact, the same engine is available in Europe with the A630 version on vehicles:
- Jeep Grand Cherokee (MY2011) power 237BHP (241PS, 241CV, 179KW)
- Chrysler 300 and Lancia Thema (MY2012) power 236BHP (239PS, 239CV, 176KW) and limited to 187BHP (190PS, 190CV, 140KW)
- Jeep Grand Cherokee (MY2014) power 246BHP (250PS, 250CV, 184KW)
And for the North American market with the L630 version on vehicles:
- Jeep Grand Cherokee (MY2014) power 240BHP (243PS, 243CV, 179KW)
- Dodge Ram 1500 (MY2014) power 240BHP (243PS, 243CV, 179KW)
And you must not forget Maserati. The most powerful version of the 3000cc A630 HP engine of VM Motori Spa, is on models:
- Maserati Ghibli III (MY2013) power 271BHP (275PS, 275CV, 202KW) and limited to 246BHP (250PS, 250CV, 184KW)
- Maserati Quattroporte VI (MY2013) power 271BHP (275PS, 275CV, 202KW)
- Maserati Levante (coming soon 2016) power 271BHP (275PS, 275CV, 202KW)
Notice - Not all of those vehicles are equipped with the EDC17C79 Bosch ECU.
With K-TAG using the most common activation, Tricore, and then selecting Protocol number 598, you first make a back up of the files in the ECU and then work on all the parameters to manage the engine performance.

Dodge Ram 1500 3.0L V6 24v EcoDiesel we want to explore, it develops 570 Nm of torque (420 lb.-ft) at 2000 RPM and at 3600 RPM the maximum power is about 241BHP
Attention! Note that the gearbox has two modes but only one allows the engine to generate the maximum torque. Check it out looking at the map “Limiter of maximum torque”.
- Table view
>> The updated Drivers available for ECM Titanium include 4 “Limiter of maximum torque”. The total number of maps you can tune is 67 (not counting the similar maps…), including the maps of “Torque monitoring”, represented by the group of maps expressed as [% Trq] (percentage of torque) which are at the top of the list.
Why so many limiters in a stock original file? The reason is simple: this engine is able to generate more than 241BHP. The turbocharger has a Variable Geometry (VGT) and that can be controlled acting on the maps included in the ECM Drivers.
Turbo System -> Variable Geometry Duty Cycle
The displayed maps are the electronic control managed by the ECU and the values contained are the percentage of the opening of the Variable Geometry expressed as [% DutyCyc], between 0 and 100%. The picture of this map shows that the original control is limited between 42-95%: there is still margin to increase the pressure.
- Table View
Turbo System -> Turbo Pressure
The maximum absolute pressure reachable with the stock original file is 2700 hPa (about 2.7 bar, 39.15 PSI). Only a little if compared to an old 2.0L TDI VAG engine. But the boost pressure must be increased balancing the increased amount of injected fuel.
The expert tuners know that the best performance is achieved when the exhaust gas temperature is not too high, editing the “Injection timing” and “Injection time” maps (included in the ECM Titanium Drivers).

Rail -> Rail Pressure
The maps which govern the rail system pressure are “risky”. Increasing too much the fuel injection pressure may cause damages.
